What is Ataxia?
Ataxia is a medical condition that affects a person's ability to coordinate their movements. It can make them appear unsteady on their feet and have difficulty with balance. Ataxia can also impact speech, causing slurred or unsteady speech patterns.
The neurological issue underlying ataxia affects the cerebellum, a part of the brain responsible for coordinating movements. When the cerebellum doesn't function properly, it can disrupt signals between the brain and muscles, resulting in uncoordinated movements and impaired balance. In addition to balance and speech problems, ataxia can also cause other symptoms such as tremors, difficulty with fine motor skills, and problems with eye movements. These symptoms can vary in severity and may progress over time.
Why carry an Ataxia Photo Awareness Medical ID Card?
Carrying an Ataxia Awareness Medical ID Card can greatly assist first responders in distinguishing between alcohol-related impairment and the symptoms of ataxia. These cards prominently display your picture and name on the front, while also featuring two emergency contacts for immediate reference.
With dimensions similar to a credit card (86mm by 54mm or 3.38 inches by 2.13 inches), these cards can be conveniently stored in wallets or purses. Alternatively, they can be easily attached to a lanyard or card clip, ensuring quick visibility and accessibility in times of need.
