Medical ID Cards: A Guide to Informing Others About Your Health Condition

Looking for a specific condition? Jump straight to it using the A–Z list below or the image grid above.

We print medical ID cards and awareness cards for the conditions listed below. All are credit-card sized, made from biodegradable plastic, and, where possible, dispatched in 24 hours (Monday–Friday).

The aim is simple: give people the information they need without you having to repeat yourself. Order online; customise your card, and preview it on screen before you buy.

We’ve been printing these cards from our UK office since 2011 – over 10,000 cards a year.

Why people carry a medical ID card

  • Everyday situations (shops, public transport, school runs)

  • Medical appointments – hand it over instead of starting from scratch

  • Emergencies – first responders see the essentials fast

We hear the same thing again and again: once someone starts carrying one, they don’t leave home without it.

Not sure which card to choose?

Our most popular option are the Premium Photo Medical ID Cards (£10.99) – they give the most information plus a second photo on the back. Because they look official, people take them more seriously.

Many people also add a single-sided awareness card (£4.99) to hand over quickly in busy places. Sometimes a visual message is the best.

FAQ

Is a medical ID card better than a bracelet?

Neither is universally "better"—it depends on your needs. Medical ID bracelets (or necklaces) are generally more reliable in serious emergencies because first responders are trained to check wrists and necks first for vital information. Cards in a wallet can hold more details and are easier to update, but they may not be found as quickly (paramedics often check wallets mainly for ID, not medical info). Many experts and users recommend carrying both: a bracelet for immediate visibility and a card for comprehensive details. Some even engrave bracelets with "See Wallet Card" to guide responders.

Will hospitals or paramedics find them helpful?

Yes, they can be very helpful, especially if clearly designed and easy to read. While not official (e.g., no NHS endorsement), our medical IDs alert responders to critical info like allergies, medications, or conditions when you can't speak. Bracelets/necklaces are spotted most often during initial assessments. Wallet cards are useful as backups but might be seen later (e.g., in hospital). In the UK, paramedics value clear, concise info—always prioritise life-threatening details.

Can one card cover multiple conditions?

The designs you see are preset so can't be changed but we offer custom medical cards which let you list as many conditions, medications, allergies, and instructions as needed across one or both sides. This is ideal for complex health profiles where space on a bracelet wouldn't suffice.

What about hidden disabilities?

We offer extensive coverage for non-visible conditions like autism, anxiety, PTSD, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, ADHD, and many others. We also offer a range of Hidden Disability Cards for those people who don't want to shout about their condition. They are a discreet way to signal needs for patience, support, or extra time in public—without fully disclosing details.

Are the cards single- or double-sided?

Our standard medical ID cards are double-sided to give you plenty of space for important information. Awareness-style cards (like simple condition alerts) are usually single-sided. With our custom cards, you can choose either single- or double-sided depending on how much detail you want to include.

How do I add my condition if it’s not listed?

Email theteam@thecardproject.uk with the details of your condition. If it's possible, we'll add it to our standard range. Alternatively, we offer fully customisable "Create Your Own" cards where you can add any text or conditions directly when ordering—no need to wait for us to update the designs.

What’s the turnaround?

We process and dispatch orders really quickly—everything leaves us within 24 hours on weekdays (so if you order Monday to Friday, it's on its way the next working day). Once posted, standard delivery in the UK usually takes 1-3 working days (but can be longer).

Do you send a proof by email?

No, we don't send a separate proof by email, mainly to keep the ordering process as fast and simple as possible. Instead, as you customise your card on the site, you'll see a clear live preview of exactly how it will look. You can adjust anything until you're completely happy, and only then do you pay.

Can I order just one card?

Yes, absolutely—you can order just one card, no problem at all. We don't have any minimum order requirements, so it's perfect if you only need a single card for yourself, a trial, or a replacement.

Are the cards waterproof?

Our cards are made from a durable, biodegradable plastic that's wipe-clean and very practical for everyday carry. They'll easily handle splashes, rain, or being in a pocket or wallet without any issues. They're not completely waterproof for prolonged submersion (like swimming), but they're tough enough for normal daily use.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, we ship our cards all over the world. When you get to checkout, you'll see a range of shipping options for your country, along with the exact costs, so there are no surprises. We use reliable services to make sure your order arrives safely.
